The International Chinese Language Program was founded in 1961 as the Inter-University Program for Chinese Language Studies, commonly known as the Stanford Center. In 1997, management was turned over to National Taiwan University and is named ICLP. The most unique feature of ICLP is its low 1:3 teacher to student ratio, where students can choose one-on-one classes or small sized classes of 2 to 4 students. Courses are very intensive and aim to improve students' speaking and writing proficiency in a short period of time. Unlike other language centers, the goal of ICLP is to help students improve their professional Chinese. Therefore, most students that come to ICLP are researchers or business specialists. In recent years, basic Chinese courses are also offered to accommodate a broader range of learners.
